Wanda McSwain

May 13, 1936 – March 1, 2024

By Jeff Chesemore

Wanda McSwain was a lover of Jesus and people, a prayer warrior, a teacher of the Word, and so much more, who in turn was beloved by thousands who had the pleasure of knowing her. Alongside her husband, Mal, whose involvement with Young Life spanned 58 years, she blessed countless teenagers and their families in her quiet, joyful, Christ-honoring way. Mal and Wanda are now together again in the presence of their dear savior.

Longtime Young Life staff, Dave Brinsfield, and his wife Nancy were dear friends of the McSwains. Dave shared this about the wife and ministry partner of his Young Life leader:

“I have always thought of Mal and Wanda McSwain as a team in ministry. While Mal was perhaps more visible within the mission, Wanda was known for being a person of refuge for prayer. Her prayers were there in the beginning of Windy Gap, Carolina Point, SharpTop Cove and in the hundreds of marriages she and Mal counseled. As Godparents to our daughter, she never missed an important date, and you knew Kelli and her family were being lifted up regularly to the Lord. I cannot remember her ever saying the cliché, ‘I will pray for you,’ you simply knew she was praying for you, because ‘she knew the King, and was friends with Him.’”
